A Brief History of 4A
4A started in 1978 at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey
as the 4A-ICC (Asian Americans for Affirmative Action - Inter-Company Council) which included other Bell Companies.
It was founded to ensure equal opportunity for Asian Americans in employment, work assignment, salary and promotion.
The organization has since evolved beyond equal opportunity and affirmative action.
It also provides professional, leadership development opportunities and cultural awareness.
4A, officially renamed as the "Asian/Pacific American Association for Advancement," is now incorporated as a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization.
The parent organization, 4A, Inc. has 4A-AT&T, 4A-Lucent, 4A-NCR and 4A-Avaya as its divisions.
At AT&T today, 4A is one of seven Business Resource Groups.
Membership is open to anyone who is interested in promoting the mission of the organization.
